Vision
What's the Big Picture?
Recognize that while the next 4 yrs may be the most exciting set of years in over a generation, Lexington is still starved for a vision that moves the entire community forward. My vision for Lexington (beginning with the 9th District) is to become known as "The Most Family Friendly place in America." Even though the next 4 years as we prepare to host the 2010 World Equestrian Games are possibly the most exciting time to be in Lexington for over a generation, Lexington is still starved for a compelling vision. While there are numerous opportunities for Lexington's future let me share with you my vision that not only leverages our strengths but also allows EVERYONE to assume ownership.WHAT IF LEXINGTON WAS KNOWN AS "THE MOST FAMILY-FRIENDLY CITY IN AMERICA?"
If we set the course to be known by the title "The Most Family-Friendly City in America" it would force us to look differently at everything we do. Consider being "Family-Friendly"...- Forces leaders to consider who "The Family" actually is (that definition may encompass the traditional family to the blended family, the adoptive family to the family of friends and one's pets) and then provide for their needs.
- Gives credence to our spending 60% of our current budget on Public Safety. Families strongly desire safety, especially for their children.
- Gives reason to focusing efforts on Quality of life issues (Public Safety, Parks, Cleanliness, Traffic, Recreational Opportunities, etc...)
- Gives focus to stopping the "Brain Drain" and retaining the best and brightest because they are will make up future families.
- Gives urgency for creating employment and entrepreneurial opportunities that are sustainable in a 21st Century Economy (work that pays enough to support one's family)
A big vision like that can start right here in the 9th District!
- Where is there a better example of neighborhoods where multiple generations live together and know what it means to be neighbors?
- Where is a better example of having multi-use parks that offer recreational opportunities for all ages?
- Where is there better retail and entertainment opportunities?
- Where is there a stronger grouping of citizens in one place that can make that vision a reality?
