Issues: Roads

Improving our Streets and Roads infrastructure is my top priority.

With overall road improvement needs well over $400 million I have worked to leverage as many local dollars as possible to attain greater State and Federal investment. This strategy has already had marked success and is proving to be a solid strategy for our District's and City's long term transportation needs.

As with all other areas of infrastructure improvement the further we can leverage our local tax dollars the better stewards we are for our citizens. The following is a brief summary of where my efforts have been in improving our roads in Lexington and specifically in the 9th District.

Accomplishments:
  • Specific working relationships with Senators McConnell and Bunning, Congressman Chandler, Governor Fletcher, the Fayette County General Assembly delegation, the State Transportation Cabinet, Regional leadership of surrounding counties, the Metropolitan Planning Organization, Commerce Lexington, as well as my colleagues currently on City Council. Not to mention a new working with relationship with the Louisville City Council!
  • Authored a new $2.2 million road bond for the city of Lexington with the caveat that it must receive matching money from Frankfort before being bonded (this action has lead to the strong partnership we currently have with Governor Fletcher and the State Transportation Cabinet).
  • Worked directly with Transportation cabinet and the Governor to obtain additional funding for Liberty Rd. (the State gave $500,000 in new money that was ultimately leveraged for $2+ million in Federal funding)
  • Creator of "The Healthway" Trail. A 5-8 mile, $2+ million, multi-use trail currently applied for with the state linking the majority of the 9th District residents to Waveland State Shrine, Shillito Park, Wellington Park, Fayette Mall, Lexington Green, Reynolds Rd and Keithshire shopping centers, schools and multiple neighborhoods.
  • Working to leverage $700,000 of local money to get an additional $2.8 million of Federal money to improve Clays Mill Rd.
  • Guided approximately $500,000+ to the 9th District during 2005 and 2006 for street re-paving.
  • Overseen nearly $1 million in paving on Man-O-War (from Nicholasville Rd. to Grassy Creek Dr.)
  • Lobbied Senator Bunning with Regional group led by Commerce Lexington for $500,000 to pay for transportation study of an I-75 Connector from Jessamine County to Madison County at the Clays Ferry bridge. This amount was appropriated in the fall of 2005.
  • Overseen Federal and State appropriations in excess of $500,000 for safety and traffic improvements on Nicholasville Rd.
  • Guided Federal dollars to study and subsequently construct traffic improvements at the intersection of Harrodsburg Rd and New Circle Rd.
Road and traffic safety improvement will continue to be one of my top priorities in serving on the City Council. Well constructed and well maintained roads are a key component in moving Lexington toward the vision of being "The Most Family Friendly City in America" beginning with the 9th District!
