Issues: Parks
Parks are a critical component of Lexington's infrastructure. They also are critical to maintaining a high quality of life which is a direct contributor to economic development in our city. In a word quality Parks are VITAL!
Over my term I have pushed for Lexington to see its Parks as an asset to be leveraged. Unfortunately we currently do not take full advantage. This is partially due to an old model of looking at who and what our Parks actually serve and a serious lack of capital investment over the past few years.- I was proud to support and ratify a Council budget that included $2.3 million for capital improvements for our city's parks. This was an important first step. Other steps include measures like Council Member Kevin Stinnett's "Playground Parity Plan" which provides an additional $500,000 in Parks budget to bring all our playground equipment up to code and safety standards across the entire city (no child should play in an unsafe environment).
- I was proud to support and champion the building of "The Miracle League" baseball field in Shillito Park. This specially designed field will allow mentally and physically disabled children ages 5-19 to play baseball. This was another great example of a public-private partnership that benefits not only the 9th District, but all of Lexington and a multi-state region (once constructed in the fall of 2006 this field will be only the 17th of its kind in the country!).
- I was proud to vote for and approve well over $250,000 invested into the Parks of the 9th District in last years budget.
- I am proud to be working with groups like the Lexington Area Sports Authority, the KHSAA and our Parks and Recreation Department to see the visioning and planning of world-class facilities to meet our ever-expanding recreational needs in Lexington (in sports such as swimming, soccer, lacrosse, and softball).
- I am thrilled to have partnered with numerous public and private entities to apply for State funding to construct the over $2 million "Healthway" Trail. This project will be the largest contiguous trail system in Lexington and will connect residents, shoppers and visitors to Waveland State Shrine, Shillito and Wellington Parks, Lowes & Walmart, Fayette Mall & Lexington Green, the Reynolds Rd. and Keithshire shops, along with multiple schools (K-12/ Public and Private).
- I believe we should recognize that in our 21st Century world connectivity to recreational locations is considered basic infrastructure for a progressive. Whether we are trying to address issues like obesity on children, aging in place, reduction of traffic, greater accessibility for the handicapped or just connecting neighbors to neighborhoods we MUST look at our Parks differently. The 9th is well on its way to that end!
