Issues: Regional Planning

Make no mistake "Planning" is really the biggest issue facing Lexington and our entire region! It is imperative Lexington work with the surrounding counties' leaders (political, civic and business) to build a coordinated vision, strategy and message to leverage the Central Kentucky Region's assets to their fullest potential for all our citizens and visitors.

For those of us in the 9th District we feel the need for regional planning daily as we are impacted by the ever increasing flow of traffic from growth in Jessamine and Garrard Counties.

This work has begun through the efforts of groups like Commerce Lexington, the Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Bluegrass ADD. I am proud to be a part of this effort and will continue to spend time building relationship with leaders in our collective region.

Fayette County Planning

"Planning" is integral to every other issue facing our city. Visionary planning is needed in every facet of our government (housing, transportation, sewers, parks, economic development, etc...).

While for many years visionary planning was not something our leaders practiced, it is now time to make that the goal we constantly aspire to.

We MUST be able to "Grow Green" (balancing the demand for new housing markets while protecting and preserving our signature landscape, the horse farms). This will require a sobering look and discussion of, "how, where and when do we grow?" PDR, In-fill and Redevelopment are just two aspects of this discussion.

We MUST have citizens (representing all sides) at the table offering ideas and solutions.

We MUST understand that to preserve farms means more than protecting grass, it means protecting the agriculture industry as an economic development tool.

We MUST build the infrastructure FIRST before we grow inside of trying always do it later (which seemingly has not worked very well). This especially applies to our roads.

Planning groups I currently serve with:
  • Council's Planning Committee (Voting member of this standing Council committee who oversees all issues related to planning for Fayette County)
  • Metropolitan Planning Committee (voting member of this Regional planning group who oversees Federal dollars for transportation projects in Fayette ad Jessamine Counties)
  • Commerce Lexington's Washington DC Fly-In (Regional Group that lobbies Federal Government on behalf of the Central KY Region)
  • Vine St. "Linear Park" Task Force (group given the charge of researching and reporting the possibilities of using elements of Vine St. to create a downtown green-space that could potentially include a "River Walk" with the Town Branch River)
  • "The Idea Engine" (group consisting of 16 college students from 4 schools charged with generating research and new ideas for the 2010 World Equestrian Games)
Visionary planning is the only means to accomplish a bigger goal like being "The most Family-Friendly City in America" - beginning with the 9th District!
