Issues: Public Safety
Public Safety is the most fundamental service provide by government to its citizens. All issues surrounding "Quality of Life" hinge on strong public safety.
When I ran for the 9th District Council seat in 2004, Public Safety was one of the biggest issues facing our city and its elected leaders. We had seen an erosion of morale in so many areas of public safety (most notable were the large attrition losses with our Police, Fire and Corrections employees). Years of neglect led to our Police and Fireman appealing to Frankfort to be allowed to organize and collective bargain. Over the past year it has been my honor to get to know the men and women who serve in all areas of Lexington's Public Safety:- Police
- Fire
- Corrections
- Code Enforcement
- E-911
- Building Inspection
- Animal Control
- Disaster and Emergency Relief
- I proudly serve as the Chairman the Public Safety Council Link (a 3-person body who interfaces with all areas of public safety throughout the year but especially during the adoption of the Budget)
- I voted for and will continue to support the plan to hire 49 new Police officers each year for the next 4 years
- I am proud to have supported every measure from public safety as to the modernization of critical equipment
- I have been working directly with our Corrections staff to improve their salaries, benefits and morale
- I had the Vice Mayor form a special task force to address and report solutions Lexington's long-term funding of our E-911 service. I serve as the Chair of this task force
- I have worked with the Commissioner of Public Safety to place Lexington's need for a permanent address for an Emergency Operations Center on Commerce Lexington's Federal lobbying agenda
