Issues: 2010 World Equestrian Games
Undoubtably this is THE largest and most important event that has ever been hosted in the state of Kentucky.
The World Equestrian Games is an Olympic-style event that is combines 7 World Championships over a two-week period. The 2010 Games were awarded to Lexington on December 6, 2005. Landing this event was the culmination of nearly 8 years of work by numerous individuals and groups. Their collective efforts will place Lexington on an international stage like it never has before. Key stats:- First time this event will have been held outside Europe
- The two weeks will fall between the September Keeneland Horse Sales and the Keeneland Fall Meet
- Approximately 500,000+ people to attend the Games over the two-week period
- Approximately 40 countries represented
- Approximately a $90 million economic impact will be felt (this is double the amount Indianapolis felt from this year's Final 4)
Answer: Because this event is already affecting all of us in Lexington and will only continue to do so. This event has forced leadership to look past micro-management and start talking about the bigger picture. It has allowed Lexington to "re-discover" its confidence in executing excellence on a grand scale. It has also caused a tremendous sense of urgency and is demanding leaders to focus and prioritize (all of which are extremely valuable). Because we now must think bigger, must focus and prioritize, must partner and leverage, must steward resources wisely and must build a strong community spirit we have the opportunity to receive greater investment into our city than ever before! This investment means more money for roads, sewers, parks, storm water, economic development, public safety and on and on and on. We in the 9th District are the beneficiaries of this HUGE investment and will begin to see tangible improvements in areas long ignored. The World Equestrian Games is BIG it should challenge each one of us to start thinking bigger, partnering more often, leveraging further and communicating more effectively. What can happen if we in the 9th District took the lead in involvement in these games? What might happen if our neighborhoods began to ask themselves what part they play 4 years from now? What will Lexington look like in 2011? How can we shape that vision? The possibilities are limitless!
